GOING ?0 THE FRONT. Mr Bert Johnson, of the news machine room of the Otago Daily Times, who waa down Inst week on final leave from Trentham, was the recipient of a purse of sovereigns from his fellow employees. Mr George Fen wick made the presentation, and referred to Mr Johnson as anotker of the boys from the office who was prepared to do his best for the Empire. Mr Fenwick congratulated him for coming forward, and wished him every success as a <soldier. Mr Johnson, in reply, thanked all for thoir present and also for their good wishes. OTAGO WOMEN'S PATRIOTIC ASSOCIATION. RiOSLYISr-KAIKORAI BRANCH. The weekly meeting was held on Thursday, when a number of workers attended, and a fair amount of material was given out to be made up. Money is still wanted for the Dominion Parcels Fund, and, the committee will be glad to receive monthly subscriptions of 2s 6d or upwards. WELLINGTON, April 20. A series of meetings was held in the schools'of Wellington City and suburbs last night to form local oommittees to undertake the work of the Government recruiting schema The meetings were small .and apathetic, and it is very doubtful whether in any any good work will result from the meetings. Aa a whole, the effort to float the scheme was a dismal failure. Six meetings passed resolutions agreeing to help, and six declared for conscription, one of the latter six promising also to help the present scheme. One meeting lapsed, one declared the board's scheme unworkable, and two passed other unnecessary resolutions. At all the 16 meetings not more thaii 1 500 people attended, and not onefifth of these agreed to do the real work. ENEMY FIRMS. PROVISION FOR WINDING-UP. ( (Pee United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, April 20. A Gazette issued to-day states that whereas the Attorney-general is satisfied that the following companies, firms, and persons are carrying on business to a substantial extent for the benefit of alien enemies resident outside New Zealand, he declares the said companies, firms, and persons to be enemies:—G. Hardt and Co., merchants, Australia and New Zealand; Hardt and Co., merchants, Manchester, England; Heald and Gray, merchant, Manchester, England; Arton Heald, merchant, Manchester, Eng--land; John Oswald Gray, merchant, Manchester, England; Markwald, Son, and Ross,' merchants, Wellington. The following are also declared to be alien enemies resident' outside New Zealand, and carrying on business in the dominion; —Eugene Slchroeder, merchant, Australia and New Zealand; H. Markwald, mer<jhant, London. In pursuance of this fact the Attorneygeneral has declared the following persons to be enemies, and ho authorises permits for all transactions necessary for the winding up of the businesses of the said companies, firms, and persons, or for the performance of existing contracts, provided such transactions taike place with the knowledge and consent of the custodian of enesmy property or of some person appointed by him in that behalf; —G. Hardt and Co., merchants, Australia and New Zealand; Eugene Sahroeder, merchant, Australia and New Zealand; Markwald, Son, and Roes, merchants, Wellington.
