HIGH SCHOOLS BOARD OF GOVERNORS.

The monthly meeting of the Board of Governors of the Otago Boys' and Girls' High Schools was held on Thursday afternoon; present—Messrs T. K. Sidey, M.P. (chairman), J. Boss, D. Bome, D. T. F.eming, H. Webb, J. M. Gallawav, and Dr Fulton. The Rector reported the death of four more old boys on service—namely, Sublieutenant J. R. C. Laid law, Corporal J. A. W. Russell, Private W. A. T. Bullock, and Private P. White. It was resolved' to- send a letter of congratulation to Lieut.-colonel H. T. Ful- ■ ton, D.S 0., O.C. Ist Battalion New Zealand Rifle Brigade, on his promotion to the rank of brigadieT-general. The Rector reported that the total number of names now upon the school roll was 441, including 113 seniors, 298 juniors, and 30 paying pupils. The corresponding totals for 1913, 1914, and 1915 were respectively 332, 377, and 397. About 160 boys of the school took part in a gymnastic display given in connection with the schools' sports meeting held under the auspices of the Caledonian Society on April 8. Their performance reflected credit on Mr Phillip's training. Mr Pow, who joined at Trentham last year as lieutenant, had now received further promotion to the rank of major. He was serving at the front, with the Ist Battalion New Zealand Rifle Brigade. The news Vas received with great pleasure by all associated with the school.—The board decided to forward congratulations to Mr Pow upon his promotion. The Lady Principal of the Girls' School reported that the roll number for April was_ 238—72 senior free pupils, 4 paying pupi'.s, and 162 juniors. For the corresponding month in 1915 the numbers were 321 —68 seniors, 156.juniors, and 7 paying fees. Of the six girls who had left since last month, one gained admittance to "the Trailing College, one was transferred to Wellington, one took a situation in a business house, one wished to have private tuition, one left for domestic reasons, and tlie sixth on account of protracted illhealth. The " billies " sent by the school through the medium of the Overseas Club to Otago soldiers at the front had reached Egypt i, n safety, and classes arid individual girls had been gladdened by the receipt of grateful and appreciatorv letters. The health of the pupils wgs on the whole very good. A few had suffered from colds and influenza, but there had been no serious illness of any kind. / Dr Champtaloup reported that, as Teouested by the board, he had inspected the Boys' and Girls' Schools in company with Dr Fulton. He took that opportunity of expressing his candid admiration of the clean and sanitary condition in which he found both schools, and those responsible for this satisfactory state of affairs were to be commended for their efforts. A medical officer of health inspecting either school in the face of an epidemic would have few, if any, adverse comments to make.—Attached to the letter was Dr Champtaloup's report on the schools.—Consideration of the report was deferred. THE RTJA EPISODE. TO THE EDITOB. Sib, —In this mornings issue a correspondent, who signs himself "A Member Rifle Defence Club," makes a very poor attempt to reply to my letter to you of the 11th inst. If he will be man enough tot sign his name, and not shelter himself behind a nom de plume, I shall be delighted to discuss the question with him through your press.—l am, etc., Ed. Kellett, Organiser Carpenters' Union. April 20.
