THE DOMINIONS

SENATOR PEARCE ON CONSCRIPTION. AN ENI6MATIC STATEMENT. MELBOURNE, April 13. Replying to a deputation from the Australian Natives' Association urging conscription, Senator Pearce said that the strongest argument in favour of conscription was that the State should exercise its discretion as to who should be sent to the front and who should remain. He did not think that more men should be sent than under voluntary enlistment. Referring to the war census, he said that 120,000 single men between the ages of 18 and 44 had refused to enlist. He thought that at present there were plenty of men available, and conscription was unnecessary.
