POLITICAL LIBEL ACTIONS
AGAINST THE CUMBERLAND ARGUS. BY NEW SOUTH WALES PREMIER. CASES SETTLED. Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright SYDNEY, April 11. (Received April 11, at 10.15 p.m.) Two actions for libel brought by William Arthur Holman (Premier of New Sout£. Wales) against the Cumberland Argus and Thomas Davis Little, claiming £2000 dam-' ages in each case, have been settled. The alleged libel consisted in the Argns referring to a political agreement not to contest elections during war time, declaring "Herr'V Holman and party had scrapped a piectf of,paper upon which:a patriotic truce was Mr Holman's father gave evidence that his son's parentage on both sides was English. • , Replying to the Chief Justice's question : "Are you, or have you ever been, of German sympathy?" Mr Holman said : "Not in the slightest." Defendant's counsel explained tfrat the words were never intended to infer that Mr Holman was of German origin or descent or sympathies. The cases were struck out.
