ENEMY GOODS

TRADING' PRACTICALLY STOPPED.

(Peb United Pbbss Association.) AUCKLAND, February 4. A statement was recently made that enemy goods were reaching the dominion through neutral countries. The Prime Minister says that so far as the Customs Department could learn —it had very wide powers of inquiry—the importation of goods from enemy countries had entirely ceased. Regarding an inquuy why the legislation of last session, which imposed an additional duty of 6s per cent, on all enemy goods, had not been brought into operation, Mr Massey explained that this_ tariff prohibition was designed to prevent importation after the war of goods from countries with which the Empire was now at war. It did not operate now, because the importation of enomy goods was totally prohibited, and any attempt to introduce articles of enemy origin would oonstitute a criminal offcnce, punishable by severe penalties. British Consuls in neutral countries had' been instructed to watch the movement of enemy goods. Their reports to the British Government were communicated to the dominions.
