" Many of the undergraduates in all our oolleges have gono to tho war," states tho Chancellor of tho University (Sir Robert Stout) in his annual report to the Senate. " Tho returns aro not complete, and aro being added to weekly. Thoso that wero received at tho office up to the closo of tho year showed that from tho Auckland University College the total number that had gone to the front was 210. Of those 14have been killed in action, two have died in hospital from sickness, three aro missing, and 22 have been wounded. In addition to these, 13 have enlisted, including one lecturer, but had not in December entered camp. From the Victoria Univer- I sity College (Wellington) 217 have enlisted, and most of these havo gono to tho front. From the Canterbury College 122 are on active service, including ono professor and t one assistant. Otago University has sent 212 to the front, including ono member of tho council and one professor, and of these 18 have lost their lives. " In order to facilitate the departure of many of tho students, extra examinations have been held. " The Rhodes Scholarship was won by Lieutenant Athol Hudson. Ho enlisted in August, 1914, and was a member of tho Samoan Expeditionary Force, and was thus prevented from sitting at the 1914 examinations. He had passed tho first section of the Bachelor of Scienco degree, and thut is the only scholastic position ho has as yet attained. Ho distinguished himself, however, in tho Junior University Scholarship examination and in his first section of the scienco degree. The Rhodes Trustees havo intimated that the Rhodes scholars who go to tho war can take up their scholarships when peace is proclaimed. "It is deeply to_ bo regretted that ono of our most promising scholars, A. Wallace, M.A., has been killed in action."
