KAITANGATA NOTES.
(Fbom Oub Own Correspondent.) KAITANGATA, January 24. A meeting having for its object the restarting of the -local brass band was held on Friday, Mr W. J. M'Dougall presiding. Seventeen members promised support, and it was decided to begin practices. The miners have decided to hold their annual picnic at Mount Stuart this year. Excellent arrangements have been made. Sergeant-major Gray has been appointed officer in charge of this defence sub-district. The installation of officers of the local Oddfellows' Lodge took place on Thursday. There was a capital attendance. The balance sheet was presented by Bro. E. Laverv, the auditor. It showed an extremely satisfactory position considering the drain being paid by the lodge to several members who have gone to the front and the extra large amount of sick pay for the year—namely, £245. It was shown that the funds of the lodge were £3389 18s —an increase of about £173 for the year's working. Two hundred and twenty-two members were on the books It was decided to place Bro. F. Hitchon's name on the merit board and to present him with a framed emblematical certificate. Bro. E. P. Lavery actcd as conductor and Bro. James Thompson as Past Grand Lecture Master. Officers: G.M., Bro. D. Middlemass; N.G., Bro. A. Nyberg; Y.G., Bro. Andrew Smyth; Secretary, Bro. Geo. Finch; Warden, Bro. J. C. Shore; Guardian, Bro. W. McLaren. The trusters —Bros. Mat Carson, Robert Welsh, and George _ Middlemass—received a special word of praise for the way the funds of the lodge had been invested.
