At tho Polico Court this morning Percy M'Hordy and Arthur Bennett pleaded guilty to a charge of using a spinning jenny for disposal by art union tickets for patriotic purposes. Mr Poynton, S.M., sarfl it was not a ease for a penalty. Tho defendants vvero convicted and discharged. CARTERTON, January 17. William Charles iZabcll, aged 43 years, a dairy farmer, committed suicide by shooting himself on Saturday night. Ho leaves ;i. wife and live children. WELLINGTON, Jamiary 17. At tho hearing of the drivers' disputo before tho Conciliation Commissioners to-day, tho employers objected to piecemeal settlements in tho different districts. They announced that they preferred dominion conditions on tho same terms as the old award, which expired in October. Finally tho commissioner suggested that a dominion conference sliould be held. If thero were no agreement within 30 days ho would refer the matter to tho Arbitration Court. Tho Basilica was filled tliifl evening, when the ecclesiastical authorities of the Wellington Catholio congregations accorded an official welcome to Monsignor Ceretti, who conveyed the Papal blessing to tho congregations. Special music wis rendered by the combined choirs of tho oity and suburban churches. The ballot of tho seamen for the position of pjc n era J secretary of tho Now Zealand Federated Seamen's Union was completed tonight, and resulted as follows: —Mr W. F. Young 820 votes, Mr Georgo Bowers 683 votes. Tho ballot for assistant secretary, Auckland Union, resulted as follows:—Mr Thomas Anderson 828 votes, Mr William Simpson 518 votes. William .lames Smith was convicted at tho Magistrate's Court to-day on a charge of illicit liquor selling, and was fined £25. Tho police described him as an old hand at the game known as "ligbthousing," or carrying a bottle of whisky and making surreptitious sales in tho street. Smith said that he was unablo to pay, and tho alternative was fixed at a month in gaol.
French authorities havo found an inexpensive way of waterproofing army -uniforms. Fat extracted from wool in tlio process of cleaning it for manufacture is dissolved and diluted with benzino or naphtha and t.ho garment is soaked in this solution for a few minutes, neither -tho colour nor the fabrio being- the least impaired by the treatment. One airman at tho front always carries a tiger's whisker with him as a mascot.
