Guineas were so called from being coined from Guinea gold. Early in August Mr Peter Johnston, Lawrence, was officially adyised (says the Tuapeka Times) that his eon Peter had been wounded at the Dardanelles, and the usual inquiry by cable brought the formal reply that ho was making satisfactory progress. No record having appeared as to tho hospital to which ho was sent, numerous inquiries have since been mad© with the object of trying to locate him, but so far no satisfactory reply has been received. The unusual oireumstanoes of a lawyer becoming surety for his client under a bail bond was mentioned 'n the Police Court at Auckland on Thursday (saya tho Herald). A young man having been committed for trial on a charge oJ perjury, Mr R. A. Singer stated that he had becomo bondsman for accused in regard to his appearance before the magistrate, and asked that his bond be also accepted for the period between the committal to the Supreme Court and the trial. Mr Singer explained that he had taken this unusual course because the young man had no friends in the Auckland district, and it seemed desirable to help him out of his difficulty. The magistrate (Mr E. Pago) considered it preferable that a bondsman other than counsel for tho defence should be found, and, as it was believed that such a person would bo available next morning, he agreed to accept Mr Singer as surety until that day only.
