WAIHEMO COUNTY COUNCIL

Tho monthly meeting of tho Wailiemo County Council was held at Palmerston on Saturday. Present—Crs Pilbrow (chairman), Muir, O'Connell, M'Cay, M'Callum, M'Lennan, and O'Neill. COBBESPONDENCE The Maniototo County Engineer wrote stating that as no voto had been placed on tho Estimates last session of Parliament for the Horseburn Bridge ho liad been directed to inform tho council that his counoil proposed proceeding with the necessary repairs, half cost of which would be debited to the Waihemo County.—lt was dccidcd that the member for Macraes Riding me eta the representatives of the Maniototo Riding and asked them to confer with regard to tho repairs of this bridge. Messrs Downio Stewart and Payne notified the council that they had be-on instructed bv Mrs M. W. Chapman, of Dunback, to demand payment of £35 for damages sustained by her on account of a fire started by ono of the council's employees, and which spread to her property. Thero were 45 chains of fencing and a quantity of feed destroyed. If the claim was not paid immediately proceedings would bo taken for the recovery of tho amount. Tho council •discussed the matter with the county solicitor, after which it was decided that the council admit no responsibility, and that the county solicitor be instructed to act if necessary. Mr M. Kitchen (Dunroibin) wroto directing tho attention of the council to the condition of the metal in the village settlement contract, and pointing out that when ho went to carry out the balance of his contract ho found tho metal was composed of dirt and stones, the latter being as big as a man's head. Ho considered he was entitled to some allowance from tho council.—Cr O'Connell moved, and Cr M'Lennan seconded, that the letter be rcceived.-TCarried.

The County Inspector reported that the works authorised at last meeting had been carried out, and the maintenance work throughout the different ridings kept well in hand.
