The oat market is firm, and merchants are paying up to 3s 9d on trucks, and are finding difficulty in getting supplies at this figure. Oats will be very scarce from now on until tho end of March. The chaff market is firmer, and up to £5 has been paid for primo quality. There are several large Government orders ia tho market, which tend to keep prices up. There is little doing in potatoes beyond a small distributing local trade. Tho price runs from 8s to 12s per owt. Tho hemp market is firm, current values being £29 10s, on trucks, for good fair, and £27 10s for fair. There is also a good inquiry for tow, and buyers can .be found at any reasonable price. Tho ryegrass market is firm, and the wholesale inquiry, and prospects for tho new season's seed seem to bo brighter than it was at one time supposed. There is very little wheat available in the market, and it commands a ready salo to tho local millers. The wholesale prico of flour remains the samo as last week — viz., £14. In the stock market prices have ruled as under: —Fat cattle: Ox beef, 43s to 445; heifer beef, 41s to 425; cow beef, 39s to 40s. Store cattlc: Three-year old bullocks, £9 to £11; 2i-year old, £7 10s to £8; two-ycars-old, £5 10s to £6; 18-monthb, £3 15s to £4; yearlings, £2 15s to £3 ss. Storo sheep: Two-tooths, mixed sexes, 17s to 18s; ewes, 18s to 19s; wethers, 16s to 17s. OAMARU MARKETS. (TEOM OCR OWN CoRRKBroxDimM OAMARU, January 15. _ A good deal of activity has been experienced in the wheat market, and a considerable number of transactions aro reported. Velvet is particularly sought, and holds tho value well, sales having been made at 5s lid and 6s net, both on trucks and delivered at mills. Red wheat is not in such great request, but sales have been made at 5s 8d to 5s 9d net at country stations, and 5s 9d net delivered at country mills. Red chaff has also changed, hands at 5s 9d on trucks. Most of tho business is in small lines, ranging from 200 sacks downwards; but transactions which covered 700 sacks composed, in equal parts, velvet and Marshall's white, for which the prices paid were equal to 5s lid for velvet and 5s 9d for Marshall's, net to grower. Velvet is now very hard to get, and is likely to retain its value; but the red varieties are offering very freely from South Canterbury, and tho prico will probably decline. Oats have advanced fully 3d per bushel during the week, but none is obtainable here, and quotations are purely nominal. Tho stock market has only been kept alivo by tho sales of yoting cattle,_ which, in consequence of tho absence of feed, are being cleared wholesale. A good number were sold during the week to go south at from £2 to £3 10s for mixed, lines, 18-months and two-year-olds. •PRICE OF SOAP RAISED. At a meeting of New Zealand soapmakers, which was held at Wellington last week, it was decided (tho Dominion states), owing to tho high cost of raw materials, to advanco the price of all soap and soda crystals. Low-grade soap will bo raised £1 per ton, high-grade £2 per ton, and soda crystals 10s per ton.
