Mr Wynn Kirkby, eldest son of Mrs A. V. Kirkby, of New Plymouth, has just received a commission in the Imperial Navy. Almost since tho outbreak of war he has boon serving on ono of tho monitors which did such good work on the Belgian ooast. In a letter to his father (Mr S. Stidolph, of Wellington), Sergeant-major S. T. Stidolph, who is now convalescent from fever in St. George's Hospital, Malta, stated that on tho island of Malta there are no fewer than 32,000 patients and 90C' doctors, nurses, and attendants.
