Driving a motor ear along tho Wanganui River Bank road at a dangerous speed—a pace estimated by the police at 40 miles per hour —resulted in the appearance of a young man at the Magistrate's Court on Monday (says the Chronicle). The police said there was a practice, when people missed the train at to engage a motor to oatcli it at Aramoho. Tho magistrate said that driving at such a rato on such a road in such circumstances was a menace to the public safety. It was really high time that people who drove motor cars and motor cycles should bo impressed to recognise their obligations and responsibilities to the public. Unless they did so, they might find themselves before the court, when substantial punishment would bo imposed. Unless the number of accidents did not diminish, there would have to be some very drastic legislation on the subject. — The Julian Calendar, -which has been in force in Russia since 325 a.d., is 13 days behind the rest of Europe. — "Thou mayest as well take away my brother as my rifle," ifl the proverb of the Mon£eu*«rina.
