A Wellington Press Association telegram states that the Ross gold mine return was 21oz Bdwt of gold from 342 trucks of wash. The min© manager of the Hauraki Ivceis (Ltd.) telegraphed on Saturday ' "Obtained 251b of picked stone from No. 3 level St Tho schcelite mines and batteries closed down for the holidays on December 29, when most of the man left the Head of the Lake for the holidays, tfie work m the mines started again on January 4 and 6, and things have settled down to their US A & second-visit has been paid to the North Auckland district in connection with cinnabar possibilities, by Dt J. M. Flatau, of Sydney, who was making investigations at Ohaewai about a fortnight ago On toe first occasion ho expressed satisfaction with tho surface conditions, and he states that, as tho result of a second visit, ho has purchased a minefield at Ohaewai, on behalf of a Sydney syndicate. Ho states that he hopes that the preliminary work will be be<mn in aibout a mooth. Some difficulty, h'e°thinks, might be experienced in sinking shafts, owing to the presence of a hot spring, but it could be overcome. He will advise the syndicate to obtain the services of an expert from Mexico or Spain. Dr Flatau has also visited Puhipuhi, but he ffnfca. that he prefers the prospects at Ohao-
wai, where there is a lode 4ft wide./ At the same time, 'he says, there is a valuable minefield in the neighbourhood of Puhipuhi. On one property there is, he states, oyer half a million tons of surface ore showing more or less cinnabar.
