The French counter-attack t failed. 7 A French communique states: The - enemy gained a momentary footing at - two points in our first line north-east of 3 Butte de Mesnil. Our vigorous counter- ■ attack drove them out, and they now occupy only two small parts of our advanced trenches. The High Commissioner reports, London, January 10 (4.55 p.m.) :— The enemy during the course of yesterday attempted no less than four concentric actions on a front of eight kilometres, from Courtine to Mont Tetu, west of Butte de Mesnil. The French fire decimated the adversary, and brought the offensive to a dead stop. The enemy were successful in gaining a footing only at two points on the first !ine north-east of Mesnil and of Tetu, and the French counter-attack drove them out. The enemy now occupy only two smaller elements of the French advance trenches. GERMAN ATTACK IN CHAMPAGNE. A COMPLETE FAILURE. ENEMY SUFFER SEVERE LOSSES. PARIS, January 11. (Received Jan. 12, at 1.10 a.m.) A communique states : Determined fighting continues in the Champagne. We have reoccupied almost all the lost trenches. It is apparent that the Germans intended to achieve a definite result. They employed large numbers and oonducted the attack on an extensive scale, but suffered a complete defeat.
