TUAPEKA SHOW

The Tuapeka Agricultural Society hold its nineteenth annual show on, the Recreation Reserve, Lawrence, yesterday. There was a large attendance of the public in spite - of the weather, which was cold and windy with occasional driving showers. The entries, numbering about 200, were much the same as in recent years, except in the sheep section, in which the entries were much more numerous than they have been recently. The luncheon and afternoon tea on the grounds was controlled by the ladies of the local Patriotic Committee, who devoted all the proceeds to patriotic funds. Good work was also done by ladies with collecting boxes for the same purpose. • The chief feature of the show this year was the sheep, in which there was a particularly good display of crossbreds. There were no Downs forward, and only one merino, but in the Border Leicester and Romney Marsh classes there was good competition. Messrs R. ,and W. Bvdfin's first prize aged Border ram was a nice, wellwoolled animal, typical of his breed. The champion ram hogget belonging to Mr M'Millan waa remarkably well grown in wool. The champion Border ewe was rW a fine, well-woolled typical animal. The winning aged Romney ram was a very good specimen, though slightly past his best Both the . Romney ohampionships fell to Mr M'Millan, his champion ram hogget being described as well grown and extra well woolled. Generally speaking, the prizetaking crossbreds were a, splendid lot, and the whole section was creditable to the district. Two of the best classes were the three strong-woolled hoggets and the three hoggets for wool and mutton. The fat lambs and fat sheep also were of a quality to challenge comparison with similar classes in any country show. ; With the exception ' of the two-year-old filly ring none of the classes for draught horses was well filled. Mr A. M'Millan was the most succesful exhibitor, but the prize money was distributed over a considerable number of owners. ; The mare championship was won by Mr M'Millan and the entire championship by Treacy Bros. There was not a great deal of competition among the light horses, but a, number of good, useful beasts were shown. The ponies made a very attractive and creditable display. With the exception of a shorthorn and three. Ayrshires all the cattle shown were crossbreds. Among them the dairy oows in milk, and tho two and three-year-old heifers, are deserving of special mention The dog section, in which 10 or a dozen handsome, useful animals were entered, was the only other part of the show. At the conclusion of the judging, which was expeditiously carried through, several jumping and trotting competitions were held. The bulk of the arrangements of the show were very satisfactorily carried thrcngh by tho secretary and treasurer (Mr John C. Browne), to whom also the press is indebted for courteous assistance.
