Dr Hendry, formerly house surgeon at the Invercargill Hospital, has been appointed to take charge of the Hammer Convalescent Home for returned soldiers (says the Southland Times), and will leave to-day to take up his new duties. On Sunday Mies E. M. Milward was presented by the St. Paul's Sunday School teachers with a gift of three very pretty (lower vases on her leaving the Sunday School and Sanctuary Guild of St. Paul's, where she had done invaluable work for years, on her approaching marriage to Mr Cecil Higginson. The presentation was made by <he Vicar, who accompanied the gift'with a short 6peech, referring to tho good work done by Miss Milward. The death of Mr Jabez Burton, a very old and highly-reepected resident of Roxburgh, is announced this morning. Mr Burton, "who was born in S&wtry, in Huntingdonshire, in; 1839, was apprenticed as * diaper. He emigrated to Victoria in 1860, ana in the following year he came over to Otago, where he was engaged in gold mining fir several yea.rs. He commenced businees as a butcher in Roxburgh in 1870, but relinquished that calling and an auctioneer, commission agent, and registered mining agent. In '876 he waa appointed town clerk of Roxburgh, and ho held the position for many years._ Mr Burton was well known in connection with tho mining industry. He was the fionior. justice of tho peace in Roxburgh, having been appointed in 1881. He was married in 1872 to a daughter of tho late Mr Jones, of Shrewsbury, and a niece of the late Mr E. , Menlovo, of Windsor Park, near, Oamaru. and had a family of three Son® and one daughter.
