Writing to his mother, Mrs H. Alabaster, of Durie Hill, Wanganui, Private E. H. Alabaster, now in hospital in England, recovering frate typhoid fever, says: " All the old hands left the Peninsula with me, as we were played right out. Wo could hardly walk down to the beach. We had a big scrap with the Turks on Hill 871, just before wo loft. Wo took it and held it, but got a terrible doing, only fivo men loft in the front trench alive. I only got three wounds, but very slight. Wo gave over the hill to Kitchener's army to hold, but they Io»t it."
