CONSCRIPTION FOR UNMARRIED MEN.
MR ASQUITH'S PROMISED STATEMENT. LONDON, November 15. (Received Nov. 16, at 9.40 p.m.) Mr Asquit'j has promised to make a statement regarding the application of conscription to unmarried men to=mor= row. He said that to avoid miscon= ception it was obvious that there would be no attempt to apply com> pulsion without the consent of Parliament.
MR EOOSEVELT INTERVIEWED. ACTION REQUIRED. PARIS, November 15. (Received Nov. 16, at 9.40 p.m.) Mr Roosevelt, in the course of an interview, said to a representative of the Petit Journal: '' If I had been President when the Lusitania was sunk and the air raids were made on London and Paris, I should have acted." He recommends the United States to adopt universal service on the Swiss pattern. The navy should be developed until it was the second in the world.
A PEACE ADVOCATE. SPIRITED REBUKE BY A MINISTER, LONDON, November 16. (Received Nov. 16, at 10.40 p.m.) In the House of Commons Mr C. P. Trevelyan said a waT of attrition meant Utter and irretrievable ruin to ourselves and Germany. There was nothing disgraceful or humiliating in obtaining our ends by negotiation. Mr Bonar Law condemned Mr Trevelyan's speech. Not a member of the House believed that Germany would restore Alsace to France or Polish nationality until she was beaten.
