CITY POLICE COURT.

Monday, November 15. (Before Mr J. R. Bartholomew, S.M.) Drunkenness.—Four lirst offenders, who did not appear, were each fined 10s, in default 48 .nours' imprisonment. Idle and disorderly.—Alargaret Cuttle appeared on remand for sentence on a ciiarge of being an idle and disorderly person. —fclub-insptctor Broberg stated that this coso was adjourned about a week ago. The accused had also been convicted and ordered to come up tor sentence when called upon on condition that slio went away to the country with her married sister. Subsequently she was permitted to take a situation in the city. She remained in this situation for a time, but occasionally took liquor, after which she had to lie down for a day to get over, its effects. She got so ; bad at tli'e finish that her employer dismissed her, and she then returned to the life of a vagrant, and the police had no alternative but to bring her before the oourt. She had a long list of convictions against her. —The Magistrate said that at the original hearing of this charge sufficient evidence had been given of immoral character on the part of the accuscd. She would be sentenced to 12 months in the Salvation Army Home. By-law Cases. —Hugh Slmoaton, William Dry'den, Charles Reynolds, were each fined ss, with costs (7s), for cycling on the footpaths in St. Hilda. David Patrick, a gad 19 years, was lined ss, without costs for a similar offence. Georgo Williams was fined ss, without costs, for allowing a. horse to wander in St. Kilda. He explained that the horse had been let out. On a similar charge Henry Alexander was fined ss, without costs, the explanation given being that the animal broke away from some others which the defendant was taking to a paddock.—— John M'Kay and Richard Bradbrook _ were each fined ss, ".vith costs (7s), for similar offences. For allowing a stallion to wander in Fox street on November 1, Georgo Childs was fined 10s, with costs (12s), and Thomas Dunn was fined ss, with costs (7s), for permitting a horse to wander in Green Island. John Mbrrison ■ pleaded not guilty to a charge of driving a motor car on the wrong side of George street.—Mr Duncan appeared for the defendant, and Subinspector Broberg prosecuted. —Evidence was given by Dr Evans that he was driving in his gig along George street, and while he was crossing Frederick street a motor car suddenly appeared in front of his horse. The groom instantly pulled up the horse, but it collided with the motor car, and fell on its knees.—The defendant stated that he was driving at a rate of between four and five miles an hour when he turned off George street. He was as far over to the left as was practicable, and he was almost in tho centre of Frederick street when he left George street. He_ did 1 not see the trap until it was on»him. —The Magistrate stated that on the defendant's own statement he had evaded the by-law. He would be fined 10s, with costs (£1 ißs). A' Defence Case.—Arthur William Ledgerwood, for whom Mr B. S. Irwin appealed, applied for exemption from attending parades under the Defence Act. In support of the application he gave evidence that he had recently undergone an operation for a serious complaint, which' had compelled him to abandon the plumbing trade, and now he was engaged at nights as a doorkeeper at the Princess Theatre. He did casual light work during the day.—Mr Irwin stated that the applicant had been an enthusiastic Territorial up until the time that he went into tho Hospital. His father was not very well, and the maiota.inence of the mother and younger members s of the family largely fell u<pon the applicant. He was willing to parade during the day if suoh a provision could be made for him.—Mr Callan, who appeared for the Defence Department, said that if the applicant was willing to do,as suggested by Mr Irwin, he had no doubt that it could be arranged. This, however, seemed to be i'n after thought. At present the applicant had not shown his bona fides. The present application had arisen out of a previous prosecution.—The Magistrate said the application for exemption would be refused.— Mr Callan asked that a charge of failing to attend parades be withdrawn. —Agreed to. Maintenance.—Patriok M'Dermott was charged 'with the disobedience of a maintenance order, the arrears amounting to £1 10s, at l(k per • week.—The defendant was sentenced to one week's imprisonment, the warrant to be suspended for a week to enable him to pay off the arrears.
