PERSONAL

Mrs Bruce S. Hay, of Auckland, is on a short visit to Dunedin, and is staying at the Grand Hotel. A Press Association message from Waipawa announces the death of Mr Alfred Dillon, ex-member for Hawke's Bay. The late Mr Dillon was a somewhat unpretentious, though useful, figure in the House, which ho entered after defeating Sir Wm, Russell in an interesting election. At the fortnightly meeting of the Dunedin Nursing Division, Miss Mendelsohn (lady superintendent) presented Dr Williams, hon. surgeon, with a case of Loawe pipes. In a. neat soeech, Miss Mendelsohn explained that this was a slight token of gratitude from her division and from the Dunedin Central Nursing Division, under Miss A. M. Andrew, for the doctor's willing services to the divisions through this strenuous year. • The late Mrs R. M'Skiniming, sen., of Patearoa, was a native of Essex, and arrived at Melbourne in 1848 with her parents. When the gold digging rushes broke out the family went to the. Bendigo, Ovens, Mount Alexander, and other fields, and the deceased had many mining experiences to relate. In 1854 she married, and on gold being discovered at Gabriel's Gully she came to New Zealand just after her husband, who was engaged in cartin" to the diggings. For a time their home was a tent on the site of Messrs Reddell's establishment in Stuart street, Dunedin. For many years the family resided in Union street, where they were very well known. Mrs M'Skimming was a more than commonly capable nurse, and in that capacity made manv friends in Dunedin. Of late years the deceased lived with various members of her family throughout Otago and Canterbury. Mrs M'Skimming was 86 years of age, and up to a few months ago had enjoyed excellent health. She was charitable, clear-headed, and cheerful to the last, and the respect in -which she was held was shown by the verv large number of people who attended the funeral. The Rev. Drake, of Nasebv, conducted the funeral service at Ranfnrlv. She is survived' by Mrs Britton (Christchurch), Mrs Schrick and Mr Robert M'Skimming (Patearoa), and Mr Samuel M'Skimmine (Queenstown). Mr John Pitches, of Ophir, is the surviving brother.
