FOR THE SICK AND WOUNDED.

NEW ZEALANDERS UNDER

HOSPITAL TREATMENT. AN APPEAL TO THE PUBLIC. In a letter which we published from him last week Mr I. W. Raymond, formerly of Invercargill, now in England, chairman of the Hospitality Committee of the New Zealand War Association in England, wrote : There are close on 2000 sick and wounded in England. The members of the various committees under the executive are determined to dispense necessities and comforts in no niggardly manner. The boys are far from home, and must be looked after, wherever the money may come from. This is the very least that can be done for them. The resources are almost dried up on this side. The dominion Government, or the people independently, would, I am confident, remit £10,000 occasionally if they could but see how carefully all moDeys are expended, and how urgently necessary is the outlay. Remember, the back pay is never a large sura. The total each man can draw after leaving hospital is 2s per day—hardly sufficient to meet 'bus expenditure. The reliable and comfortable boarding-houses charge 30s per The allowance is wholly inadequate. Knowing the _ generosity of the people in the dominion, I hope if any appeal be made that they will feel safe in responding, knowing how the money is being applied. Since Mr Raymond's letter was printed by us_. the Minister of Defence has invited from the public further contributions for the purchase of comforts for sick and „ wounded New Zealanders in England and. elsewhere. He states that he has no funds in hand for that purpose at the present time, though there is still a balance in the hands of the High Commissioner. The money which he invites the public to subscribe is used to buy cigareltes, tobacco, stationery, shaving gear, etc., over and above the Government's provisions.

We shall be pleased to acknowledge the receipt of any subscriptions ■whiclh' may be sent to us for. this fund, -which may be described as the Invalid Soldiers , Gift Fund.
