INCREASED MARRIAGES
EVADING MILITARY SERVICE.
ONE EFFECT OF NATIONAL REGISTRATION.
(Fhom Oub Own Coeresp6ndent.) WELLINGTON, November -9. The number of marriage licenses issued in Wellington last month was 164—twice as many as in the month of October, 1913, and October. 1914. During September the marriages solemnised were 97, while in Juno (the previous best month) the figures were 110. Last month 46 marriages took palce in tho office. To a reporter the deputy registrar said: "It is striking the number 'of young men who were married during the month, a«d particularly during the period immediately following the issue of the registration cards. Of course, the soldiers going av,ay at the beginning of the month helped to increase tho rate, but after that we became so busy that I had to engage an extra clerk. The rush was undoubtedly caused by the national registration. The majority of the- men were from 20 to 23 years of age—some of them fine, strapping fellows, who would probably make good recruits. An unusual number of men were under 21. The increase came suddenly, and the falling off has conje just as suddenly."
