THE WESTERN FRONT
GERMANS USING NAVAL GUNS,
A NATURAL INFERENCE. SHORT OF MILITARY AMMUNITION. (Times and Sydney Sun Services.) LONDON, November 8. (Received Nov. 9, at 5.5 p.m.) A correspondent at headquarters, who accompanied a party of distinguished foreigners, points to the interest in the recent fighting. They -watched the artillery replying to the German shelling with interest. The ability to do this is really the crux of the situation. Previously it was the Germans who had the artillery, and the Allies were forced to silence under daily provocation. Now tihe boot is on the other foot. Though we consumed an enormous quantity of ammunition in October, we have an ample margin for daily use. The visitors were presented with significant trophies, sudh as the noses of ar-mour-piercing shells, apparently fired 1 from a German naval gun and not a military one. The objecijn using this against field positions leads to the inference that they are short of supplies.
