The manager of the Pukepoun Sluicing Company, at .Hamiltons, reports that he made a' start for the season on October 7, and is now busy sluicing, with fair prospects. WorkHs usually commenced at this claim in August, but .operations were hampered by the exceptionally dry season, and he was not, able to make" a start, until the recent rains fillod the dam. During. August 66,881 ounces of gold, valued at £258,106, were exported from New Zealand,.' as agaifst 3088' ounces, valued at ■ £12,911 for Auglst of last year.. For the first eight months of this year,, however, only 133,976 ounces; valued at £528,116. were exported, as against 207.478 ounces, valued at £822.406 for the first eight months of 19W- ■ ■ .„,,. The secretary of the Nokomai Hydraulic Sluicing Company reports that a wash-up was made on Friday, at- No. 2, the result being 670z Bdwt for two weeks' slu.emg. At No/ 3 four shifts were lost last .week through a-bad block in the elevator. The 38ft level was. finished, and the nozzle lines were ready for sinking the elevator-on Mpn- 1 "We understand," says, the Metal Bulletin, " that great activity prevails on all' properties in Norway producing molybdenite, which material is in urgent demand in Germany in connection with munition supplies. The cutting off-.of-the Australian oro creates a certain difficulty for Germany, but fair quantities :of raw material are now being received from other sources." ■Tho supervisor of, the Success dredge reports, under date October 10, a run of 122, hours for a record return, of- 740z Bdwt. This return was won from the middle section. The bottom was brown sand, and there are two deep gutters, which contain heavy, coarse wash "of splendid quality. i Buried timber gave considerable trouble. The dredge has been shifted to the north i end, and will operate there for some time. Tho last throe weekly yields of this dredge have resulted .in. over £800 worth of gold being Won.' It is stated on good-authority that a'company of £100,000 has been formed to work Rimu goldfields. It is understood that practically the whole of the capital has ■ been subscribed in Sydney and Melbourne. Captain Daniels, who has been in the district , for the last six weeks, lias had extensive prospecting carried out under his personal supervision, and it is said he is, highly satisI fied with the results obtained. It is pro- ' posed to augment the present water supply , at, Upper Rimu by building, extensive. 1 breastworks round "the present dams or reservoirs, with a-view to increasing their. ' carrying, capacity.' This,-water is "to be used for sluicing the upper terraces, while the 1 lower part of the field will.be worked either by -dredges or by a Kershaw pump. Captain Darnels has left the West Coast on a '.' brief visit to Dunedin to inspect some plant in connection with the scheme.. It is expected there will be very little delay in commencing the work, which will give emi ployment to a. large number of .men.
