BUTTER AND CHEESE MARKETS.' Means A. S. Paterson. and Co. .have received the following cablegram from Messrs J. and J. Lonsdale and Co.* London:— "Butter: High prices stopping consumption. There are no changes to note in the grain market It ie reported that the duty on imported, wheat and flour is to be re-imposed on November X. This has rather improved the outlook for wheat, although it is not likelj to have any immediate effect. The potato market is easier, In view of the reports ' from Sydney. The weakness there, it is hoped, may be only temporary. Owing to the drought, planting operations in the Northern River districts have been seriously affected. The arrival of a shipment of potatoes from San Francisco, and the large quantity now on the way from New Zealand, may have caused the present easing of the market in Sydney; «> . SHEEPSKIN SALE. The Dunedin Woolbrokers' Association (Messrs Dalgety and Co., A. Moritzson and Co., National Mortgage and Age'ncy Company, New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agenoy Company, Otago Fanners' Cooperative Association, Donald Reid and Co., (Stronach, Morris, and Co., and Wright, Stephenson and Co.) report as follows:'— The fortnightly sale of sheepskins was held on Tuesday, when fair-sized catalogues were offered to a full attendance of buyers. Bidding was animated, and prices were firm at. last sale's rates, and, if anything, were inclined to be a shade firmer. Quotations: — Best halfbreds, lid to Hid; medium to good, lOfd to 10|d: best fine orossbrede, 10fd to ll|d; medium to good, lOjjd to 10|d; best crossbreds/IOJd to 10|d; medium to good, 9|d to 10£ d; best merino, B|d to °£d; medium to good, 7§d to Bid; best hoggets, 10id to 10|d; medium to good,"9|d to 10id;. best pelts, s|d to 6£d.; damaged and inferior, 3£d to 4£d; best halfbred dead, 9id to 10& d; best crossbred dead, . 84d to °$d j best hoggets dead, 9§d to lOd; medium and inferior eorts at lower quotations, according to condition.
