GOING TO THE FRONT. • A very pleasant function took place at Port Chalmers last evening, when the members of the local police force and a few friends assembled to honour Mr Stuart M'Donald on tho .eve of his departure to join the Ninth Reinforcements. For slightly over two years Mr M'Donald has filled the position of clerk of the court at Port Chalmers, and his courteous , and obliging, dieposition has made- him extremely popular with a,U who came in contact with' him. The Mayor (Mr T. Soollay) presided, and, after a short toast list had been honoured, he presented Mr M'Donald with a wristlet watch on behalf of those present, accomthe gift with an expression of the esteem in which the recipient was held. He stated that Mr M'Donald had gained the goodwill of all who had come in touch with niin, and his departure would be greatly regretted by everyone who knew him.' TTie recipient, who has also been presented with a set of field compasses by the members.of tho Presbyterian Bible class, responded in a suitable manner,- and was loudly cheered on resuming his seat. Mr M'Donald will take his departure for the north on Saturday morning. His place will be. filled by Mr 'A. E. Reynolds, of tho Lyttelton Court office, who once held a position in the Magistrate's Court at Dunedin.
