CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

The monthly meeting of the Council of the Chamber of Commerce, held yesterday, was attended by Messrs G. W. Gibson (chairman), J. B. Shacklook, F. 0. Bridgeman, G. W. Sare, R. W. Gibbs, W. F. Edrnond, E. C. Hazlett, H. C. Campbell, J. P. MK3owan, T. Somerville, J. B. Waters, R. G. Sise, and'F. M. Slhortt. 1 Messrs. H. S. Fenwick (chairman of the Dunedin Stock Exchange)) and Robert Duthie (New Zealand Express Company) were elected members of tho chamber. The Invercargill Chamber of Commerce wrote notifying.that the Grain Merchants' Association had fixed tho standard of oats, to hold for all time, and that grade samples would bo forwarded later on.—Received.

The Commissioner of Taxes, in replying to a communication from the chamber asking that contributions to patriotio funds be allowed a deduction from assessment, Btated that the Minister could not allow a deduction to be made.—Received. A letter, from the Hon. A. L. Herdman advised the establishment of a Discharged Soldiers' Information Department, and asked_ for the co-operation of the chamber. —Assistance promised. The Secretary of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce wrote advising that the ca,rgo on tho Stolberg and Lubeck (Germiiri steamers interned in Java) had been discharged, and was now,; in oourse of shipment to. Australia, but that negotiations as to the release of cargo in the Roon had failed in the meantime.—Received.

The Chairman submitted the programme of the citizens' demonstration committee, to be held in the Garrison Hall, and explained the arrangements made for the gathering.— The chairman's action was approved of. Dr Miura, of Tokio, wrote reporting his return _to Japan, arid expressing his appreciation of the courtesy he hpd received while in New Zealand as representative of the Japanese Department of Agriculture and Commerce.—Received.
