THE PATRIOTTC FUNDS.
. Siß,—The letter of " M." in last Saturday's issue is very much to the point. His view that "a large proportion of the money was given to relieve the necessities of Zealand soldiers " is one that ia more widely held than supposed. It is, regrettable/ that -we - should .cultivate a parochial spirit |in ,' any war , matter, and eet up provincial distinctions as to funds.ln any case, I do not see how such distinctions are to he carried out. Dealing with recruiting, we point ■ out, in defence of Otago, that a great many of bur young men are to be found in the North Island, and, have onlisted from there. ;In the distribution of tie Wounded! Soldiers' Fund are these men toi be. left-on the Auckland or Wellington funds for relief ? To carry the proposal of local application of funds to its loigical conclusion. each small county or, district -might clai?p- ; to ■ its own funds. " M." is undoubtedly right in- questioning the assertion now being made that the moneys were raised with .the stipulation that they should be-'applied to Otago purposes. Many subscribers like myself, subscribed as citizens of New iZealand for' the troops of New Zealand.—l am, etc.,':V F. ,
