Letitia Jane llojd cam* up for sentence at the .Supreme Court tod iv. before the Chief .hist ice (Sir Robert Stout), on a charge of having published a defamatory libel on a nun in the Wanganui Convent knowing it to be false. His Honor .said his duty was to see that the law was vindicated. Prisoner had tried to foment feeling iunong people who bel'eved with her and peoy;b who did not believe with lier. Prisoner hud written lies, and ho could not sr.tcnee her to less than six months' imprisonment. He would get the i>aol surgeon to witch over prisoner, and see what was th« cause of the outburst that had given her so much trouble. .Following are oth-r sentences passed: — J. Kirby. for theft from the person, nine months: Gc-or-je Penmm. for indecent assault on a little girl two years of age. and Thomas Alfred Rafter, for indecent exposure. 12 months: Victor Fivist. for assault and robbery, three years; Matthew Bell, for carnal knowledge at, Westport, four voars.
