A Press Association message from Westport states that the coal shipments last week were as follow:—Westport Coal Co., 15,199 tons 7cwt; coke, 35 tons 15cwt; Westport-Stockton Co., 1979 tons 13cwt.

Another malicious fire alarm, given by breaking the glass of the indicator at the corner of High and William streets, brought out the fire brigade at 20 minutes past 10 on Saturday evening, both the machines being hurried to the spot. Detective Connolly yesterday arrested a man who will be charged in the Police Court this morning with breaking into surfacemen's buts at Flat Stream and Taioma, on the Otago Central line, and stealing money and clothing therefrom. The Mirror, the manuscript journal of the St. Andrew's Literary and Debating Club, was read in the club's rooms on Saturday evening to a small audience. The editors, Messrs N. E. Crimp and W. Fraser, were able to submit an excellent series of original papers, all of which had distinct merit and some of which gave evidence of real literary gifts. The subjects dealt with were very varied, including descriptions of scenery, Scotchmen, the mineral wealth of the Red Sea borders, and war topics. The introductory editorial was obosen by vote as the best paper of all, after a keen discussion. In view of the small attendance at the recent meetings, is was decided to close the club down for the remainder of the season.

A severe earthquake shock was experienced at Westporc at five minutes to 9 on Saturday night, followed by lesser shocks during the evening and on Sunday (says a Press Association telegram). The direction of all the shocks was from west to east.

The English mail which -was despatched from Dunedin. via Auckland and Vancouver on June 12, and which arrived at Vancouver on July 2 (ono day late), reached London on July 17 (two days late).

Mr H. Y. Widdowson, S.M., presided over a brief sitting of th-i Police Court on Saturday morning, when a number of cases of drunkenness wore dealt with. A first offender, who did not appear, was fined 10s, with the alternative of 24 hours' imprisonment, and two other first offenders were fined 5s each, with the same alternative. John Pringle, with a "record," was fined 10s, or in default 24 hours' imprisonment, and Joseph Mellville Bell, once convicted] within the past sis months, -was fined £1, with the alternative of throe days' imprisonment-.

Our Wellington correspondent reports that the Minister of Defence (the Hon. J. Allen) left for the south on Saturday evening. He will visit Dunedin, and will not return to Wellington until Thursday next.
