OAMARU MARKETS. (Fbom Oue Own Cobhespondent.)

m * * i i ©AMARU, August 14. .Mat. stale, and unprofitable may bo accented as descriptive of the condition of tho local grain market thie week. There has not been a single sal© of grain of any description, and the prospect of anything in tho nature of a revival in wheat has been diminished by the reduction in tho prices of flour, bran, and pollard, for millers are not, likely to come upon the market as buyers until driven thereto bv tho necessity for replenishing their wheat' stocks. Tho potato mancet. in sympathy with tho advance in tho Sydney market, has recovered, to some extent. Sales at country stations. have been mado at £5 10a and £5 12s 6d,

while- for delivery in Oama-ru £5 12s 6d, £5 15s, and £6 net have been paid, the top tigtiro representing the present value. Tlio continued absence- o£ rain has caused something in the- nature of a paralysis of business in tho stock market, which nothing but a real good ruin can relieve. There are some sellers under iho compulsion of shortage of feed, but there, are practically no buyers, except at prices nuicii below values under normal conditions. Tho position was clearly demonstrated at the regular sale at Duntroon yesterday, -when Side.? wore slow and few, and those few only eifected by tho acceptance of low prices. At the Oamaru weekly sale, with a poor yarding, business in store, stock was difficult to effect, and prices wero poor. A good ram would produce an immediate transformation, and restoro values, for thero would oo at once a decrease of sellers and an increase of owners with improved food prospects. But the needed rain does not come, despite tho fact that tho conditions have frequently appeared favourable for a good downfall. While store sheep are. out of favour, thoro is a keen quest for fats, and this week several lines of fat wethers have been placed at 30s. 32s 6d, and 335. The prices for fat sheep wero also well maintained under the hammer. The onlv transaction roported in storo sheep was tlio sale by private treaty of a line of 1300 two-tooth halfbred tussock wethers at 18s. There has been practically nothing doing in storo cattle, whilo fat animals are scarce. A nico lino of fat bullocks was placed at £16 10s, and for a lino of light bullocks short of finish £10 was given. Dairy cows are not good selling property At a dispersal sale at Herbert on Thursday of a good dairy herd, including a number of animals with clean pedigrees, tho prices obtained were Delow tho normal market, as a rcsidt of tho. shortage of feed. The cnimals were certainly not in good condition, but the prices all round wero not good. Tho highest Cguro obtained was £13 10s, and several others brought between £12 and £10, but the majority went at lower prices.

SOUTHLAND MARKETS.

(Feom Oub Own Correspondent.) INVJiRCARGILL, August 14. Tho oat market is very quiet, aud sales ai-o difficult to olfect. 'lliero is practically no business doing with farmers ai, present, and quotations are, therefore, purely nominal. Tho general quotation lor .a grade Gartens is 4s 3d to 4s 4d, f.0.b., 6.i., Blulf. Efforts are being made by the local grain merchants to get the embargo on the export of oats removed, as it is felt, in view of the slackness of tho demand from the North Island, that this restriction is unnecessary.

The chaff market is also quiet, and thero is very little demand from tho North Island. Prices remain about the same as last week—viz., £6 to £6 5s for prime quality, on trucks, though higher prices have been paid. Thero is nothing whatever doing in straw chaff. Tho potato market is quiet and thero is very httle doing. Merchants are not open to buy at more than £5 on trucks, and growers, for the most part, aro not responding to this low quotation. There is very little doing in ryegrass at present. The seed is verv firmlv held, and it is expected that it will all be required during tho next two or three months. Ihere is not a great deal doing in hemp, winch is worth about £23 on trucks for high point fair, and £24 for good fair. ihere is very little business passing in either wheat or flour, the wholesale price of the latter 'being £16 10s on trucks, at Invercargill There is a little inquiry tor fowl wheat, on tho basis of 5s 6d to 5s 9d on trucks.

The stock market continues acute in all classes and a good deal of stuff is going through, agents all round putting through more during the last few months than tor a long time Two sales of note were held during the week, one at Wallacetown T. £„ y ' and one at Otautau on Friday At Wallacetown sale there was a large entry of all classes, especially in the fat sheep and • fat cattle sections. Local butchers are right out of stuff, and were very keen to get supplies, and in consequence the market kept firm. Store cattle were fairly well represented, although the quahty was fairly poor; yet prices, especially for well-bred, decent stuff, were firmer than those ruling for tho past few weeks. At Utautau sale on Friday, some 8000 sheep were yarded, comprising a few pens ox really first-class hoggets. Although bidding was not so keen as at the last few sales, yet tho whole yarding changed hands even in some cases at higher prices than those ruling, some really nice lines of hoggets bringing as high as 22s lOd There was a very small entry of ewes and wethers, and if there had boon manv ewes they would have been quickly snapped up. Crood forward bullocks continue in good demand, and still hold their prices. A number of sales of dairy cows are going to be held during the next few weeks; a good few dairymen going out of cattle into sheep. It is expected, however, that prices tor good young cows will continue high laking the whole market, on tho face it aFcwSf * Sakl *' k VCry Str ° ng in Prices are as follow:—
