PORT CHALMERS BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The. fortnightly meeting of the Port Chalmers Borough Council was held last evening, and was attended by the Mayor (Mr T. Soollay), Crs Powell, Williamson. Stevenson, Maweon, M'Lachlan, Anderson, and Fail. CONDOLENCES. Before commencing tho business, the Mayor pointed out that troopers Salter and Murcott, who had gone from Port Chalmers, has lost their lives at the war. He also made sympathetic reference to the deaths of Lieutenant Allen, Mrs Widdowson, and Mr Andrew Spence (of the Evening Star staff), and the council resolved to send letters of sympathy to tho bereaved relatives. CORRESPONDENCE. In response to a request from Mr Verdi M'Kenzie the oourcil remitted tho charges for the Town Hall, in which recently a patriotio concert was held. A similar request from Mr G. F. Booth for a Navy League lecture, was granted. A letter was received from the Railway Traffio Department pointing out that in order to mstal the interlocking system at Port - Chalmers it was found necessary to encroach upon and fence portion of a littlefootpath.—Referred to Works Committee for report. * Mr Bain, the 6anitary inspector, applied for an increase of wages in respect of his work,, which had materially increased since ne took it over, and in view of the binincrease in horse feed, he was unable to carry on -without incurring a loss.—Referred to Samtoy Committee for a report, xu i. fV lance .Committee reported that the total reoeipts since last meetingamounted to £{>4- lis, and accounts amounting to £182 0s 7d were received for payment, .leaving a debit balance of £748 5s - Adopted. The Finance Committee reported that ?"r, "was taking the matter of a water supply on the wharves into consideration, with a view, to augmenting the supply f or shipping, particularly when there were a number of vessels at the wharves. The forester reported that as the property lately purchased from Mr White required to be fenced, and some repairs mado to the fen©mg on Williams s property, it would be necessary to secure a quantity of posts— Bay, about 600. Ihe Works Committee reported that the street channels etc., had received the usual n the paf?t fortnight. The Dunedin City electric light department had commenced to, erect the poles for the .Macandrew road lighting extension.—Adopted.
