PORT CHALMERS MECHANICS' INSTITUTE
The .annual meeting of the members of the Port Chalmers Mechanics' Institute was held on Friday evening, Mr E. Knewstubb presiding over a smaller attendance than The annual report stated that during the year 66 books of fiction and 56 historical works had been added, as well as several magazines. The number of members remained about the same as last year (74), and it was considered very desirable by the committee that these-should be increased rhree cases of books had been ulaced on board the transports, and the patriotic funds had also been assisted. There was a sum to the credit of the funds of the institute amounting to. £8 17s, and a balance on fnftoTS^TpTss! 1^011 with bui,d - The report and balance sheet were adopted on the nwtion of the chairman. The retiring office-bearers were re-elected without exception as follows:—Mr E Knewstubb (president), Messrs Booth. Platts, Mawson, Mitehel, Leek, and Towsly (committee) Mr Tewsly (treasurer). Miss EM Urant (secretary and librarian) +J* vote tho sum °f £ 5 to the Wounded Soldiers' Fund along n-ith the proceeds of a sale of magazines which was "eld at the close of the meeting Ihe meeting concluded with votes of thanks to the retiring officers, the treasurer and the secretary and librarian.
