SHIPWRECK RELIEF SOCIETY

A meeting of the executive of the New Zealand Shipwreck Relief Society was held yesterday afternoon, and was presided over oy Mr ('. W. Chamberlain.

Ine granting of £4 to each of three British seamen who had formed part of the crew of the Norwegian vessel, the i'ram, wrecked at Maiden Island, was approved. The sum of £3 per man having been given to the crew of the Rukiura, which was wrecked at Stephens Island, the action was approved.

In connection with the quarterly state, merit of receipts ,uid expenditure, the Chairman mentioned that they had had no serious misfortunes lately. They would touch their £5000 mark beiore very long. Their interest had now commencrd to come in, anci for the quarter just expired they had received £104. There was a balance of £120 at the bank. —The statement was adopted. The eub-comiiiiitec appointed for the ensuing quarter was composed of Mr W. Belcher, Captain Beaumont, the chairman, and the treasurer (Mr Whitson). Some discussion took place as to granting pecuniary aid in a patriotic direction, and it was finally resolved that the oxe.-n----t'vo inquire whether a portion of the funds of the fiociety could be legally devoted to patriotic purposes, and if so. t hut the executive recommend to a later meeting to what fund the donation should bo assigned. It/was further decided that the sum to be given be £100.
