WELLINGTON, June 8. Ihe last advice received by the chief electoral officer from the Bay of Islands was that, witn one return to come, the figures were:—

STATEMENT BY SIR J. G. WARD. IP*B UsilTin Hmtus AssociATiriM AUCKLAND, Juno 8. Sir Joseph Ward arrived here to-ni<*ht from Whangarei and the Bay of Islands. Referring to the result of the by-eleo-tion, he said he accepted the verdict of the electors philosophically. His party had fought a hard, fair fight, and Mr Menzies had done the best he could in a huge electorate m the' limited time at his disposal. Sir J. G. Ward declined 'to make any statement on the political situation until after the Taumarunui election was dccided.
