DISCUSSION BY ST. KILDA COUNCIL.

At the meeting ot tho St. Kilda Borough Coruncil last evening a statement was torwarded" from tho Hospital and Charitable Aid Board showing the estimated receipts and expenditure for tho ensuing year and the munner in which it was proposed ta apportion theso. 'Ihe levy due lrom the Borough of St. Kilda was £825 4s 9d, as against £568 last year. The Town Clerk, Mornington, wrote in oonncction with this maker, stating that a meeting of representatives of local bodies had been held recently, and it had been decided to form a deputation to wait on the Hospital Board at its next meeting. The writer asked that the St. Kilda Council should be represented by a delegate on this deputation.

A further letter was received from the Clerk of the Porfcobello Road Board, protesting against the increase in this levy, and asking that joint action should, be taken m dealing with this question. The Mayor said the increase in the levy would mean an extra expenditure of more than £5 a week for the borough, and that was a big consideration. , No doubt, however, the board had a good answer to the objections that were being raised. Cr Scurr said he would move that the council should co-operate with the other local bodies that were taking action, and that tho Mayor be appointed to represent the council on the imputation to the Hospital Board. Be was of opinion that this matter ehould bo straightened out, and ho thought he could say that something would be done. This would not bo in the direction of reducing the benefits which the poor and sick received from the board, but in the direction of providing for some of this relief by loans instead of by direct contribution, as at present. He was of opinion that the money would have to be borrowed, and in that case posterity would have to boar a share of what the people of to-day were required to pay. The motion was carried.
