MEETINGS
o An important meeting of the South Dunedin Women's Christian 'iemperance Union was held in the_Cargill Road Wesley Church on Thursday afternoon. Mrs Cameron presided, and distributed tho attractively gotup Kitchener pledges. These consist of tho Union Jack, together with Lord Kitchener's instructions to each soldier of the Expeditionary Army, and tho pledge to. abstinence, written by Mrs Parker, sister of Lord Kitchener. Mrs Don (dominion president of the W.C.T.U.) then addressed the meeting. She explained the apparent apathy of tho Prohibition party as due to the. wave of patriotic fervour which had swept across the country, causing in many, oven thoso keenest in the movement, a temporary obsession. But the prohib : tionist movement was not dead, nor were thoso taking part asleep, nor appalled by the recent defeat. The Kitchener pledge was regarded with favour by those not previously abstainers. Mrs Don proceeded, to discuss practical methods for tho furtherance of tho work, both in its dornestio and national aspect, and greatly cheerod those present by consenting to act as president to tho "South Dunedin branch. The Hanover Street Baptist Debating Society held a very sucecesful meeting on Monday evening;. The subject, " That local navies are not in tho best interests of the Empire," was keenly debated by Messrs H. Goring and- H. Justice (affirmative), and Messrs G. Hendry and W. M'Pherson (negative). A very free discussion by tho members followed, after which the negative speakers -wore declared the winners.
