INTERVIEW "WITH THE SULTAN. IMPOSSIBLE TO FORCE THE DARDANELLES. NEW YORK, April 8. The Sultan gave an audience to a party of American journalists. He said he -was convinced the Dardanelles cannot be forced. It was very unjust that .the Allies should want to force the Dardanelles just to import Russian foodstuffs. It is impossible, he said, to express any high opinion of German valour and efficiency. TURKISH CAVALRY OFF KANTARA. LONDON, April 8. The Press Bureau states that a small body of Turkish cavalry was sighted close to Kantara. The Turks were driven off. MINES IN THE BOSPHORUS. TURKISH NAVY SUFFERS SEVERELY. PETROGRAD, April B.' Mine-laying operations in the Bosphorus resulted in seven Turkish gunboats being sunk and two cruisers seriously damaged. SULTAN OF EGYPT FIRED AT. CAIRO, April 8. A native fired at the Sultan when he was leaving his palace. His assailant was arrested. The Sultan, who remained calm, received an ovation.
THE WOULD-BE ASSASSIN. CAIRO, April 8. (Received April 9, at 8.45 p.m.) The shot missed the Sultan. The assailant was an Egyptian, 25 years of age.
ASSAILANT'S CONFESSION. CAIRO, April 9. (Received April 9, at 11.40 p.m.) The culprit has confessed that he intended to assassinate the Sultan on Accession Day, but was prevented by the stringent precautions taken.
