MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS

LABOUR CANDIDATES SELECTED

(Fhou OnR Own Correspondent.) INVERCABGILL, April 9. At a further meeting of representatives of the Laioour organisations last eveninoa selection of Labour candidates for the position of councillors at the forth coming municipal elections was made It - will be remembered that on the occasion of a similar election two years ago five candidates were nominated as a Labour ticket—Messrs T. 0 Byrne, A. Glass, Jacob Alsweiler, H. Sharp, and M. J. Forde. Mr O'Byrne", who had previously captured a seat on the council at a by-election, was the only Labour candidate who proved successful, but it was well-known that the official Labour -.vote was not the prime contributing factor to his return. Mr O'Byrne is the only one of the quintette of 1913 who has again been nominated, and in addition the Rev. J. K. Archer and Messrs H J Farrant and R. R. M'Gregor have been selected. Mr Arcner, who is a Baptist minister, has during his sojourn in Invercargill occasioned considerable notice owing to his Socialistic leanings, and it is understood that before coming to Invercamjll he was a member of the Social Dwnccratic 1 arty. Mr Farrant was a candidate - for municipal honours in 1912, but suffered a severe defeat. Mr p M'Gregor, who is* a member of the Railway Department, is not unknown oh public bodies, having been a member of the South School Committee and of the School Committees' Association It is understood that the list of Labour candidates is not definitely closed, but whether any more nominees are likely to come forward is not yet known.
