Alter serving for four years with Captain Bloomlield's unit Major Giant was appointed adjutant to the Auckland Infantry Battalion (Countess ol Ranlurly's Own], and was promoted to tho rank of caiptam. In 1909 he, together with three other officers,- was selected for two years' training iu tlie Regular Army at Home, where he was attached to tho 20th Regiment, Lancashire Fusiliers. He worked hard, and put iu a lot of time at the School of Musketry, taking a keen interest in musketry and machine grin work. On his return to New Zealand in 1911 he was appointed, on tlie inception of tho Territorial system of training, brig ado-major to the Otago Mounted Rifles Brigade, and was stationed for some timo at Oamaru, where he also carried out tho duties of group officer. On the outbreak of the present war Major Grant was placed on the District Headquarter Staff no A.Q.M.G. In addition to his ordinary military difciea Major Grant has always taken the keenest interest in shooting, and has for some years regularly attended the championship rifle meeting in the capacity of camp adjutant. The above is but a brief outline of a very active career, but it is sufficient to indioate that Major Grant has worthily won his promotion from timo to time, and it goes without saying that the best wishes for the future success of so deservedly popular an officer will go with him from all Otago troops, and, indeed. all tho men who have served under him in tho dominion.
Dr A. Monchieff Finlayson (son of the Rev. A. M. Finlayson, of Waitati), who has been geologist for the Indo-Bwrma Petroleum Company for five years, is proceeding to the front. His teem of engagement with the company has not quite terminated, but ho obtained leave on the condition that he did not go with the Burma contingent, which left in January. He proceeds direct from Rangoon to London, and hopes to qualify for an officer's commission ;he will join the raraks. He has had some useful work training in Rangoon with his own volunteer corps and with regular troops in recruit drill.
At the valedictory social tendered to the Rev. Mr Patchett at the Milton Methodist Ohurch on Wednesday evening, the services to the church by Mr D. Brown, who will leave shortly' to join the Sixth Reinforcements were recognised. He was presented with a wristlet watch and pocket Testament.
