CAPTURE OF MEMEL. GERMAN TRICK DISREGARDED. PETROGRAD, March 21. Official : As the Russians advanced two Tegiments of Landsturm, defending Memel ! were driven back and mingled with the population. » The Russians, entering at 8 p.m., encountered firing from houses and barricades, and civilians, equally with the troops, participated in the defence. The Russian troops were then withdrawn, and Memel was subjected to a short bombardment, which ended the resistance. The town was evacuated, the inhabitants taking refuge in Konigsberg. The Russian official reply to the German threat of reprisals points out that Memei was defended by armed forces, whilst the inhabitants of the town participated in the defence. I ! ■ A GERMAN REPULSE. J PETROGRAD, March 21. ' The Germans, after the fight at Tauroggen (north of Tilsit), were repulsed over their frontier. J SORTIE FROM PRZEMYSL. ! AUSTRIANS SUFFER HEAVILY. i PETROGRAD, March 21. Official : Details of the repulse of four Austrian regiments who made a sortie Trom Przemysl show that the Russians captured 107 officers, 3954 men, and 16 machine guns. Prisoners describe their losses in killed and wounded as enormous. CLOSING IN ON PRZEMYSL. PETROGRAD, March 22. (Received Mar. 22, at 11.30 p.m.) Official: Westward from the Niemen the Russian advance continues successfully. Considerable success has been obtained in the Svidnik-Sniolnik district, where we have secured the enemy's principal dispositioiw, taking 2400 prisoners, including 46 officers, and seven guns. The enemy's attacks in the direction of Uszok and Munkacs were repulsed. Near Przemysl we captured a village and all the forts round about.
The garrison has been driven from the line of fortifications.
