CITY POLICE COURT

Monday, March 22. (Before Mα- J. R. Bartholomew, S.M.) Drunkenness. — Murdoch M'Cusker pleaded guilty to this offence in Princes street on March 20.—Sub-inspector Broberg stated that the accused had three previous convictions against him, but none since August of last year.—Ho was fined ss, in default 24 hours' imprisonment. Prohibition Order. —A. prohibition order was granted against a man on tho applica--tion of his wife. By-law Cases.—Percy Davidson, who did not appear, was fined ss, with costs, for driving a motor car on February 11 after sunset without such car being provided .with a red light at the rear.——John Ferguson wjts fined ss, without costs, for permitting cattle to wander on Alexandra Park, at St. Kilda, on March 9. James Kerr for unlawfully removing a building from one area to another in Stuart street without complying with the provisions in clause 74 of the city by-lawe, was fined ss, with costs (£1 8s). I'or a second offence, that he did unlawfully make certain alterations to a dwelling houso in Stuart efcreet, whoreby tho open space attached to such dwelling house had been diminished eo as to have a lesser area than was required by section 294 of "'The Municipal Corporations Act, 1908." he was fined 10s, with costs (£1 8s). Maintenance.—Florence Robertson applied for a separation, maintenance, and guardianship order against her husband Kenneth N. Robertson.—The defendant, who was present, consented to the application, and an order was made for the. payment of £1 10s per week, and for £1 10s past maintenance, with solictor's fee (£1 Is). —Hr C. N. Sourr appeared for the complainant. A leading Wellington mercantile house (says the Dominion) has received the following cablegram from its London representa-tive:-—"The West Coaat steamer is postponed to April 15. Labour trouble delaying mail boat Transit to London suspended for some days. Prices stiffening. Sharp advance in freights expected." The message is one of considerable importance to mercantile houses. The Weet Coast steamer referred to ie tho boat which merchants were expecting to leave Liverpool about now; while the mail steamer mentioned is tho fortnightly boat to New Zealand. The further intimation that prices are stiffening and that a rise in freights is expected is not good news;
