MINING.

The Waihi correspondent of tho Auckland Herald reports that tho development of the low level, No. 11, at a depth of 1300 ft, of tho Waihi mine, is being pushed forward as speedily as possible and with encouraging results. The Martha reef is being driven upon 'both waye and in the drive west is now about 50ft out from tho main crosscut. Mineral ore has been followed for tho full distance. Tho Royal reef is being followed oast, the drive, which is at present in lowgrade ore, not yet having reachcd tho point at . which values may be expected to oomo in. The crosscut .west from No. 4 shaft to No. 2 shaft has been passing through a huge body of quartz for the last 70ft to 80ft, with quartz still in tho faoe, and about 25ft to drive to connect with No. 2 shaft. This is apparently tho point of junction of tho Welcome and Empire lodes, and, although low grade as a whole, the reef has some nico ore scattered through it. At the same point at the_ level above only 32ft of quartz was. met with, the Welcome section carrying nothing of value, while only about 2ft of the Empire was payable, the remaining lOf tto 12ft being hard, low-grade quartz. The existence of more than doublo tho width of ore in the' bottom workings, carrying patches of good grade quartz in it, causes the development to be regarded as distinctly interesting, but as to its importance nothing definite can be said pending further exploration. _ Good progress is being made with tho sinking of No. 4 shaft for another level, No. 12, it being now down about 50ft below No 11 level.
