WAIKOUAITI COUNTY COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting of the Waikouaiti County Council was heid on Tuesday, there being present Mr M'Gill (in the chair), and Crs Orbe.U, Kilpatriok, Mickelseu, Ijaley, oiad Charlton. INSPECTOR'S BEI'ORT. Tho Inspector submitted the following report on tho progress of works in the various ridings during the past month:— Hawksbury Riding.—The surfacing on tho lower end of Mount Watkins road has been ooraplotod, and Paterson's ford has been temporarily repaired. The pitching at Snell's bridge has been dono, and the water tables on Snell's road cleaned out, and tho road surfaced. Tho water-tables on tho Hawksbury Bush road are being cleaned out and the metal raked in and blinded with clay. The bridge on the Main road across tho Waikouaiti River requires re-tarring. Specifications for gravelling the Flag Swamp road have been sent to the district engineer, but no reply has yet been received. Received; bridge on Main road to be tarred as suggested. Merton Riding.—Tho blinding and gravelling of the metal on tho Karitane to Merton Railway Station road has been completed, but the road will require further attention to put it in good order. The putting of rotten rook on the gap on the Round Hill road will be finished during this .week. Tho slip on Blucher road has been cleared. Tho metal on White's road, Warrington, has been raked in and blinded with clay. Tho ■water tables have been cleaned out on this road, and the metal 011 Russell's road is being blinded with clay. Tho water-tables oil this road rcquiro cleaning out — Approved.

Blueskin Riding.—The surfacing on Love's road has been completed, and the surfacing on tho Port Chalmers to Blueskin road has been done from the boundary of the county to Matheson's. Tho asphalting at Mansford has been done, and the water-tables on several of the roads in Mansford cleaned out. Two portions of ■walling on tho Lower Harbour road have been repaired, and 40 yards of stone put in at the foot of the piles at the Orokanui bridge; but it requires 20 more yards to finish it. Several of tho planks on this bridge are worn very thin, and will require renewing. The planks of the bridge on the Main road can be usod for this work. The sheeting on the wing walls requires attention. Thero are several places on the Main road requiring about 10 yards of maintenance metal to do the worst parts. Mr Park has generously given the stone for the Orokanui bridge free of cost.—Adopted. The inspector was instructed to get the necessary work done, and also to attend to a wash-out at Grassy Point, on the Lower Harbour road.

North-East Valley Riding.—The metal on the Main road, Mount Cargill, has been raked in and blinded with clay. The water-tables on this road have been cleaned out in several places. The water-tables on Hall road:, Sawyers' Bay, are being cleaned out, and the footpaths are being repaired.— Adopted. CORRESPONDENCE. The Railway Department wrote complaining of cattle wandering in the vicinity of tho crossing at Waitati, and asking that something be done to abate this dangerous nuisance.—Request to be attended to. A letter was received from the Board of Agriculture pointing out the difficulties that had arisen in regard to enforcing the Noxious Weeds Act, and asking the council whether it was advisable to have it enforced in tho whole of the county or in any part of it.—Alter some discussion tho council resoh ed to reply that in ite opinion the Act should be repealed as regarded bush and rough country. The Clerk of the Waihemo County Council wrote stating that work on Philip's road, Stoneburn, had been completed at a cost of £41 15s.—Inspector to visit road and report.

The Secretary of the Ota go Motor Club wrote enclosing a cheque for £10 towards the cost of repairing the Merton and Karitane roads.—Received! with thanks.

Mr J. J. Wright wrote asking the council to repair the top end of the quarry road connecting with the Manse road, a 6 its condition became very bad in wet weather.— Inspector to report. A letter was received from Messrs Aslin and Bedford asking the council to have the matter of the drainage on Mr W. A. Russell's property at Warrington attended to, as there was some difficulty in disposing of the storm water and tho sewerage from the adjoining houses. —The council decided that the question of drainage should bo settled amongst the ratepayers interested. Mr James M'Pherson and sis other ratepayers in the Blueskin Riding wrote drawing the council's attention to the bad state of the road from Holland's corner to the Main road.—lnspector to report at next meeting. GENERAL. James Summers was appointed to collect the dog tax for the Hawkesbury and Merton Ridings, and P. O'Farrell for the Blueskin and North-East Valley Ridings. The rangers' reports, showing that 77 cattle had been found wandenng during December and January, were received.

It was decided that on all rates outstanding after February 28 10 per cent, interest be charged. Accounts amounting to £240 10s were passed for payment.
