SPORTING.

I'OiUHTUY PARK TROTTING CLUJS. SUMMER MEETING. FIRST DAY. The Forbury i'urk Trotting Club opened its meeting ill line weather, although there was a slight breezy blowing in Uie afternoon. Tho attendance was very large considering it, was an ordinary null-Holiday, but visitors hoin all parts of the Soutn island were out in .strong force. As a result of heavy rain over night tho track was a bit; rougn, and the sulkjs were inclined to bump. /in apphcat.on of the roller, however, improved the going, and towards tho end the track really required watering, as the dust was inclined to rise.'' The watering cart, iiowever, did not out in an appearance. The card for the day provided some really interesting racing, but in one or two races mishaps completely settled the chances of several liorsce on the tra<J{. Allan Doone looked a winner in the First Amateur .Handicap, but a good sort in Rummy cut hun down and won. Allen Doono put in couplo of mixes half a mile from homo, and was beaten out of a placo at the linish by Spylaw Maid and Macwood. Octave was unruly ut tho start, and breaking into a gallop in the first furlong, appeared to interfere with one or two horses. The Bi'onzcwing was always showing tho way in the Stewards' Handicap, and was closely attended by Jioiclo arid Imperial Perfection. A good race between tho placed lot and Nutwood Jun., who finished fourth. The bronzewmg stayed the best and won nicely at the linish. The bulk of tlie money camo lor Little Kauri and George M. Junior in tlie Kensington Handicap. Georgo M. Junior hung on the mark and had to conccdo over half a furlong to tho leaders in the first quarter. Belette showed paco in the early part, but tired. Little Kauri, well handled by i'\ E. Jones, just beat the scratch horse Yarraville at the linish, but apparently had a little in hand. Black Yet was always threatening danger, and finally finished a good third. Georgo M. Junior, after getting up to and staying with the leaders for a considerable part of the journey, tired over a quarter of a mile from home, and dropped away. He was clearly the unlucky horso in the race. An unfortunate accident happened shortly after the start of tho Dunedin Cup, which completely settled tho chances of Sherwood, a wheel of whose sulky was smashed, and Beriously interfered with Adonis and St. Swithin. St. Kevin led well into the straight on the home run, but tired and stopped badly, and a fine finish saw Persuader just beat Wallace Wood. Irandocia ran a fair third, and St. Kevin was fourth. Crown Prince was well up at one stage of tho proceedings, and Calm showed a good deal of paco in patches. A series of mishaps occurred in connection with the Trial Handicap. Chelston broko shortly after tho start, and interfered with Scenery. lilrosa came down when beginning the third furlong and stopped Papeete, and the mishap between this pair blocked Tarah, who was pulled up. The track was a bit dusty at this time, and it was not easy to distinguish tho horses, but the originating source of the trouble appeared to bo hobbles. Imperial Perfection, a promising colt by Prince Imperial, made amends for his defeat earlier m the day by winning the Trial in good style. A mishap in the early part of the race did not permit some of the others to show their true form. Rostrebor, kept well together by A. Pringlo, won the Otago Handicap in good style, tho placed lot being the only ones to go fairly level. St, Swithin and Bonista both hung on the mark in the King George Handicap, and Cameos at onca struck a smart gait. The failure of this panto move off blocked some of those behind, and Ravenschild, to keep 'clear of trouble, had to make a wide detour, turning out of the straight. The start practically decided the race, as, although the others got to Cameos, the break she obtained at the outset enabled her to win well at the finish. A bad light was caused- by the glare of the sun while the last race was being run. It was ono of the best mile races ever seen on the track, and going down the back eight or nine horses were bunched in tho lead. Dot Bobbins, running a bit wide, was momentarily in the lead as they turned for home, but in a good finish, Truth just pipped Gamechild on the post, Dot Robbins was close up, third, and then catpo The Kings General, Kinetic, and Bonny Jenny. The totalisator investments amounted to £19,074, as compared with £18,253 on tho corresponding day last year. After a game Cisco won by half a length. Time, 2mm 35isec. NOTES BY SENTINEL. It is understood that C. Emerson intends lodging an appeal against his suspension by tne Wellington Racing Club. Flying Start, Wisebird, Boldstroke, and Court Martial will represent Sir George Clifford at Egmont. Sea Pink was caught in the tapes when he failed to leave the mark on the second day at Trentham. The stewards held an inquiry as to why he was left at the post. iiutala's injuries at Trentham will, probably prevent him from racing again this season. Emperador and Bimeter will represent tl.e stable at Egmont-. A Canterbury owner who is in favour of cast-iron treatment of winners in light harness racing, which means that a horse should not be let out slower than its winning mark, is one of the first to complain that his Dan Patch should have an elastic stitch put in his handicap. Tho Canterbury Trainers' Association, is requesting the local authorities to improve the state of the roads. One of these days there will be a New Zealand Trainers and Owners' Association, and clubs using tracks with their roughness hidden by long grass will, have to pay more atention to galloping ground than they do at present. Nowadays a track is "in excellent order" if it carries a .good growth' of green grass of liberal length, even though it may carry as many holes as a kitchen colander and as many humps as a regiment of camels.
