The Kurow left Weetport yesterday morning for Port Chalmers. The Warrimoo went into dock yesterday for cleaning and painting. The steamer John sailed yesterday afternoon. for Wanganui, via way ports. After loading a general cargo at Dunedin the Kotare left late last evening for southern ports. The Kowhai sailed yesterday afternoon for Grey mouth direct. The Poherua arrived at Port Chalmers early yesterday morning from Bluff, hinging about 7000 crates of cheese for transhipment to the Waimana. The schooner Commerce was towed to sea yesterday morning, and sailed for Apia (Samoa), where she will load Homeward cargo. About 9 a.m., or a little later, the Hud-dart-Parker liner Westralia is expected to berth at Dunedin on arrival from Auckland, via way ports. She will sail again tomorrow on her return trip. The big liner Waimana was towed out of dock yesterday forenoon, and berthed at the George street pier, whore she is undergoing a complete transformation from a troopship to the more proeaic but equally useful cargo carrier.

After being delayed for over a day owing to the difficulty in securing her full complement of firemen, the Flora managed to leave her anchorage at Carey's Bay about midnight on Tuesday, when she sailed for the West Coast, via way ports. The cargo steamer El Cordobee arrived yesterday afternoon from Liverpool, via northern ports, and was berthed at the Victoria wharf. She brought a consignment of general merchandise for this port, where she will complete her discharge, and also load cargo for West of England porta. This vessel Delonged at one time to the Tyser Company, and was known in those days as the Indradevi, a name which recalls the fact that she caught fire while loading at Auckland for London. The fire had such a hold of the vessel that practically the whole of to fire-fighting forces of Auckland were requisitioned before it was subdued. Bv that time her bows were submerged, and only her forward deck houses were visible above water. She remained in that predicament for several days alongside the Auckland wharf before being refloated. She was subsequently purchased b<~ Messrs Furnees, Withey, and Co., and has since been engaged trading between London and the River Plate.

Included amongst the special types of vessels built or building during the past 12 months under the special survey of Lloyd's surveyors mention may be made of the steamers Atlantic and Pacific, the largest lumber-carrying vessels under the American flag; two vessels for the Russian Government and one for the Government of the Commonwealth of Australia, intended to carry oil in bulk and specially strengthened in view of their bavin™- to supply warships with fuel at sea; and an auxiliary schooner yacht being built by Messrs G. Lawley and Sons, Corporation of Boston, Mass., in the construction of which alloy steels of high tenacitv are being employed, thus enabling the scantlings to be substantially reduced, and at the same time fulfilling Lloyd's requirements concerning the structural strength of tho vessel. FROM LONDON DIRECT. ARRIVAL OF THE KAIKOURA. The New Zealand Shippino- Company's t.s.s. Kaikoura arrived off Otago Heads at midnight on Tuesday, and steamed up to town yesterday. The vessel left London on the morning of December 13. Heavy weather was met with in the Channel and across the Bay of Biscay, followed by fine weather and moderate winds to the longitude of 95deg E. On January 16, in this longitude, a very heavy westerlv gale of hurricane force was experienced, lasting 48 hours. From then onward strong (southerly winds and unsettled weather were met with until the Heads were reached. A number of large iccbergs were passed between long. 115dei» and 117deg E.
