OTAGO AMATEUR SWIMMING CLUB.
OPENING CARNIVAL. The opening' rarinvn.l of i tie Otag«i Amateur swimming Club took plute at tuc Ivluiiicipal Swimming liatlis last evening. There was an excellent attendance of tn<• public, ami those present evinced the keenest interest in th« very interesting prognumuu of events drawn up by tho club. Some line, performances were put up, and the winners of tile maiden and inteicliib events showed themselves to be very promising swimmers. Misses L. Kemp and J. D. Millar, winners of the Junior and Senior Lathes' Handicaps respectively, have made great strides in a abort time m the acquirement of a nice neat stylo. The former young lady swam IUO yards aaginst time during the evening, covering' this distance in tho very creditable time of lmin 34sec. It is the intention of tho executive of the association to consider sending Miss Kemp, to Napier to compete at tho .Now Zealand champ.onship meeting, to be held there next month. All tho arrangements in connection with the baths hail received tilt; careful attention of Mr 11. E. Olds. All the club officials worked expeditiously, and tho events were got off in good time. Following are particulars of the events: —
MAIDEN HANDICAP (66 2-3yds).—First heat: 11. 11. Herbert (scratch) 1, S. James (6sec) 2. Also started: L. Esquilant, J. Drown, and R. Wood. Second heat: W. Barr (3sec) 1, W. B. Miller (ssec) 2. There were no other starters. Final: W. Barr (3sec) 1, W. B. Miller (ssec) 2. Barr is a young swimmer, but his fino exhibition showed that he had obtained complete mastery of tho art of natation. Ho won by about a length. Time, 50 3-ssec. INTERULUB HANDICAP (66 2-3 yards). —E. J. Dawson (scratch) 1, J. Doako (4see) 2. Also started: H. H. Herbert, H. M. Restieaux, and J. Calliford. Second heat: M. B. Miller (Usee) 1, B. B. Wlieeley (7sec) 2. Also started: T. J. Dawson, H. Thomas, and C. M'Glashan. Final: W. B. Miller (Usee) 1, B. B. Wheeley (7sec) 2. A very close finish The limit man got away to a good start, and maintained his lead throughout. Dawson came away strongly at the finish, but just failed to make good. Tune, 49 3-s&ec INTERCLUB HANDICAP (220 yards).— J. Doake (30sec) 1, A. Jones (25eeo) 2. Also started: H. Thomas, F. Turner, H. Blackie, and D. J. Robinson. Only two finished. Blackie dropped out when about 2Myds had been covered, leaving Jones and Doake to fight out the finish. The latter won just on tho touch. Time, 33 2"5560 JUNIOR LADIES' HANDICAP, under 16 years (66 2-3 yards).—Miss L. Kemp (scratch) 1, Miss J. Begg (20see) 2. Miss R. Gardham (ssec) 3. Also started: Misses V. Gatdham, R. Wylie, L. Miller. Miss t£emp promises to be a really spiendid swimmer and a coming champion. She won easily by several vards. Time, 76sec. SENIOR LADIES' HANDICAP, over 16 years (100 yards).—First heat: Miss J. D. Millar (scratchy 1, Miss E. G. Turner (lCsec) 2. Also started: Misses J. M'Naught and Pridham. Second heat: Miss D. Ashcroft (12sec) 1, Miss W. Ashcroft (15sec) 2. _ Also started: Miss Matheson. Final: Miss I. Millar (scratch) 1, Miss D. Ashcroft (12sec; 2, Miss W. Ashcroft (15sec) 3. Miss Millar, who has several previous performances to her credit, won comfortably by about 12ft. Time. 2min 8 l-ssec.
SPRINGBOARD DIVE, one running and one standing. Maximum 20 points.—J Doake (19 points) 1, F. Turner (18 points) 2, G. James (16 points) 3. Also competed: D. J. Robertson, M. S. Tyson, H. H. Herbert, J. Pereira. and A. R. Brewer. A very interesting event. The first and second prize-winners gave an excellent exhibition of neat diving. EGG-AND-SPOON RACE.—M. S. Tyson 1, H. M. Rest'eaux 2. Also started: D. J. Robinson, H. H. Herbert, and E. J. Daweon. This event created a great deal of amusement.
CORFU DIVE.—S. Gillies 1, R. B. Wheeley 2. Also competed: D. J. Robinson, A. Yule, F. Turner, Munro, J. Pereira, M. S. Tyson, and J. L. M'lndoe. The lifebelt was gradually removed further from the starting point until all the competitors but Gillies and Wheeley were eliminated. Both failed at the last trial, but the first prize was awarded to Gillies, who was the cleaner diver
RELAY RACE (handicap).—Y.M.C.A. '4see) 1, Baths team (6sec), 2, Drainago Board (12src) 3. Also competed: O.AJ3.C. team scratch. A good finish. Time, 2min 39 l-ssec.
