REPORT OP DECEMBER EXAMINA TIONS.

At the session of tho University Senate to-day the interim report of the Recess Committee of tho Dee-ember examinations was received. The committee's recommendations were adopted, and scholarships were awarded as follow: —

S. A. Wiren (Wellington College) gained seventh place in tho entrance scholarship examination, but, being under age, was not qualified to hold t- scholarship. Of the remaining candidates for entrance scholarships, 59 wore recorded as having gained "credit," and also as having qualified for matriculation and solicitor's general knowledge; and of the remainder 40 were recorded as having qualified for matriculation and solicitor's general knowledge. Jean M. Marks was recorded' as having passed in French for the Intermediate Mue. B.

The following were recorded as having qualified for medical registration on entrance scholarship papers:—R. S. R. Francis, A. A. Reid, R. Gilkison, S. R. A. Graham, C. H. Tait, M. M. Anderson, and H. J. Colvin. Of 1462 candidates for the matriculation examination, 516 were recorded as having passed the whole examination, 101 as having completed partial passes, and 100 as having gained partial passes. Of the remaining candidates, 17 were absent, 56 failod to complete partial passes, and 672 (who had entered for the whole examination) failed to pais. OTHER BUSINESS. On tho motion of Professor Chilton, the Chancellor was authorised to make arrangements for the first meeting in 1915 of the Board of Studies, after consultation with tho chairman of the Professorial Board. The examiners for the Macmillan Brown prize recommended that as the four compositions sent in were unworthy of the prize it should not be awarded this ycax } and that the subject for 1916 be, "We must bo free or diie who speak the tongue that Shakespeare $i>ake." The recommendations were adopted. Speaking on the Macmillan Brown prize, Professor Hight said that the prize did not seem to be well enough known. On the motion of Mr Hoeben, seconded by Professor Hight, it was decided to send printed notices of the University prizes to the university colleges. The Finance Committee recommended that university scholars on military service should be allowed to retain their scholarships and bo paid as they fulfil tho conditions of their scholarships.
