OTAGO ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY.

A meeting of the council of the Otago Acclimatisation Society was held on Monday, and was attended by Messrs G. W. M'lntosh (president), Cowie, Peden, Brinsley, Cousins, Rutheiford, Ogilvie, Baker, A. E. Jenkins, Wilson, Pattison, and C S. Jenkins.

The Game Committee recommended as follows:—That a letter be sent to the Hawea executive urging it to make urgent representations to the Hon. \V. Fraser that culling is imperative in the Hawea herd, and asking him to support an application for a grant to assist in this matter. That a letter be written to the Tapanui Society asking if it would be advisable to have the Pomahaka district closed to deer stalkers this season. That, with the exception of the Upper Pomahaka district, the season for red deer stalking be the same as last year, and that the regulations be the same as previously. That a letter be written to the Minister of Internal Affairs asking him to authorise the shooting of hinds for culling purposes_ in both the red and fallow deer herds during the stalking season. That the season for pukaki be _ limited to 14 days. That the season for "grey duck be as usual. That the season for black swan be three months —from May 1 to July 31. That the season for paradise duck be 14 days—from May 1 to May 14 (inclusive), that the limit of birds "to be taken in any one day be 25 head. Not more than 12 paradise duck to be taken in any one day. That the season for teal be the same as usual (except black teal). That 25 birds be the limit of the number of quail that can be taken per day. That the limit for mallard ducks be 12 per day. That certain districts be closed against quail, shooting—in a line east frorr Macraes to Waipori, thence to the coast via Milton. That a letter be written to the Minister regarding the regulations respecting opossums. That all traps used for trapping oposfums should be properly muffled. That the council purchase a motor bike for the ranger. That the council apply to the Minister to reserve a portion of Gladbrook Estate, section 22. block IX. That the deposit on block paid by Messrs F. L. arid D. Donkin, who have gone to tho war, be refunded. That the Tapanui Society be informed that owing to tho limitation of funds at the disposal of the society it has been decided to dispense with the services of the local ranger for this year, and to place the supervision of this district in the hands of the society's ranger.—The report was adopted. The Angling Committee recommended as follows : —That 300 rainbow yearlings be placed in Mr Lyders's dam at Saddle Hill. That a letter of thanks be sent to Constable Craig for the interest he takes in. angling in his district. The committee reported having received a letter from the Department of Internal Affairs cancelling the previous regulations in re netting in Lake Hawea, and granting permission for each licensee to use' one net. Mr Alison (secretary Mataura Angling Club) had written stating that all licenses sold were issued in Otago and to Otago anglers. With regard to a letter from Mr W. Moffatt, Milton, in re netting on the Tokomairiro, the committee recommended that a letter be written to the Minister asking that regulations be gazetted that no netting is to be allowed above three-quarters of a mile from the mouth of the river. Mr Moffatt had written advising that as a result of the competition held bv the Bruce. Angling Club 400 eels had' been taken out of the Tokomairiro River this season. Mr James Nelson (president Milton Anglers' Club) reported that he had caught 100 eels with the pot supplied by the society. An angler had written admitting that he had been fishing with two rods on December 23 when the ranger caught, him. The Glenham Sawmilling Company had written that it would make alterations during the holidays to prevent the sawdust from getting into the stream. Tho committee recommended that the ranger inspect the mill ihe first time he was down that way.—Mr Peden, in moving the adoption of the report, referred to the case of an angler who had been fishing with two rods, stating in effect that it was not an isolated case, and that, in view of the fact that there was a diversity of opinion as to the right to use two rods, the position be tested.—The Chairman concurred in the opinion expressed by Mr Peden, and said that the matter was in the hands of the solicitor and might be left there.—The report was adopted.
